Both my SO & I use that term, but to make fun of ourselves(we’re 37 & 34). Everyone else I know who uses it does it the same way, to mock ourselves for stuff that our parents seem to do effortlessly but takes us a lot more energy/time/etc. to do. Or that we don’t want to do because we want to do more fun stuff.

For me a lot of it is that despite being in my later 30s, working a real 9-4 job, owning & renovating my own home, having a normal car & classic truck in the driveway, a motorcycle in the garage, bills getting paid every month & money going into savings... I still feel like I’m faking it. I still feel like someone is going to show up and tell me I’m not doing a good enough job at being a grownup and I need to go move back in with my mom and stop pretending.

And I know that’s BS, but when I haven’t done the dishes in 2 days and the basket of clean laundry has been sitting on the couch for 4, I’m going to joke about my finally dealing with that shit. And “adulting” sums up “ I making fun of myself for the fact I feel super validated for doing base-level bring a grownup stuff. ” best.
